Dacă pentru autorii lor cântările sunt precum copiii, atunci englezul Tim Hughes, în vârstă de 25 de ani, a purtat "Here I Am To Worship" până la termen, lăsând această melodie plină de evlavie să prindă forma desăvârșită de-a lungul a nouă luni. În 1999, pe când era încă student, s-a așezat pentru prima dată să dea un răspuns muzical citirii din Filipeni 2:5, unde scrie: "Să aveți în voi gândul acesta, care era și în Hristos Isus." Iar partea cu smerenia o stăpânea încă de la început.
"Mă jucam la chitară când strofa a ieșit pur și simplu", își amintește el cu modestie. "Dar nu reușeam să găsesc un refren care să-mi placă. Cel original era jenant de slab!"
Din fericire, Tim a înregistrat strofa pe dictafon, iar câteva luni mai târziu, într-un moment liniștit de creație, a legat-o de o altă idee melodică puternică și a dus "Here I Am To Worship" la bun sfârșit.
"Citisem despre cruce și meditam la jertfa uimitoare a lui Isus", spune Tim despre tema versurilor. "Uneori, când Dumnezeu ne întâlnește, nu prea știm cum să răspundem. De multe ori este prea mult ca să putem cuprinde. Sper că, într-un fel mărunt, refrenul surprinde tocmai asta: 'Here I am to worship. Here I am to bow down. Here I am to say that you're my God. You're altogether lovely, worthy, wonderful.'"
Deși cântarea era terminată, autorul tot nu era convins de potențialul ei. Conducând închinarea într-o zi în biserica sa de acasă, Soul Survivor, Tim a cântat "Here I Am To Worship" înaintea comunității, iar pastorul lui, Mike Pilavachi, l-a sfătuit să o folosească mai des. De atunci, Hughes, care se formase cântând piesele îndrăgite ale trupei Delirious și ale lui Matt Redman, a văzut cum cântarea capătă o viață a ei proprie.
"Trebuie să fie lucrarea lui Dumnezeu... Oamenii par să se regăsească profund în ea și am trăit momente deosebite de închinare cu această cântare", recunoaște el. "Îmi amintesc de un moment de la finalul unei conferințe Worship Together din San Diego, unde o cântaserăm. Formația s-a oprit, iar adunarea a continuat să cânte refrenul încă vreo 15 minute."
Încercată pe drum și binecuvântată de pastor, "Here I Am To Worship" a fost în curând gata să fie înregistrată ca piesă-titlu a albumului de debut al lui Hughes, lansat la sfârșitul lui 2001. Produs de Jason Halbert și Dwayne Larring, membri fondatori ai trupei Sonic Flood, albumul a prins viață astfel: cei doi au înregistrat mai întâi partea instrumentală, apoi au zburat la Londra pentru a înregistra vocea împreună cu Tim, în, culmea, sala de clasă a copiilor din biserica lui.
"Au montat un microfon și calculatorul, iar eu am cântat", își amintește Hughes. "A fost destul de ireal să fiu înconjurat de ursuleți de pluș, păpuși și piese de Lego."
Astăzi, Tim își continuă lucrarea în întreaga lume cu Soul Survivor, iar "Here I Am To Worship" ajunge la un public tot mai larg. O căutare rapidă pe internet scoate la iveală credincioși entuziaști care vor să obțină versurile și partiturile. Și, lucru demn de amintit, Michael W. Smith a oferit propria versiune a cântării la un concert înregistrat pentru viitorul său album live, Worship Again. (Nu există încă o confirmare oficială dacă interpretarea lui Smith a intrat pe lista finală a proiectului; albumul apare pe 22 octombrie.)
Cu sau fără vâlvă, Tim Hughes rămâne izbitor de smerit față de lucrarea sa și preferă să fie numit un închinător, nu un artist.
"Motivația principală din spatele cântării a fost pur și simplu încercarea de a surprinde un răspuns la faptul că Isus a renunțat la tronul Său din cer ca să umble pe pământ și, în cele din urmă, să moară pe cruce", confirmă el. "Pentru mine personal, a fost un lucru minunat și un adevărat privilegiu să văd cum a folosit Dumnezeu această cântare."

If songs are like children to their writers, then 25 year-old Englishman Tim Hughes carried "Here I Am To Worship" to full term, letting the reverent tune take perfect shape over a nine-month period. Back in 1999 while still in college, he first sat down to craft a musical response to his reading of Philippians 2:5, which says, "Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus." And from the start, he had the humility part mastered.
"I was playing around with my guitar when the verse just came out," he modestly recalls. "However, I couldn't get a chorus that I was happy with. The original one was embarrassingly bad!"
Thankfully, Tim recorded the verse into his Dictaphone, and months later during a quiet creative time, he patched it together with another strong melody idea and brought "Here I Am To Worship" to fruition.
"I'd been reading about the cross and thinking through Jesus' amazing sacrifice," Tim says of the lyrical theme. "Sometimes when God meets with us we don't quite know how to respond properly. It's often too much for us to take in. Hopefully in a small way the chorus captures that: 'Here I am to worship. Here I am to bow down. Here I am to say that you're my God. You're altogether lovely, worthy, wonderful.'"
Although the song had been completed, the writer was still not convinced of its potential. Leading worship at his Soul Survivor home church one day, Tim sang "Here I Am To Worship" for his fellow members and was duly advised by his pastor Mike Pilavachi to start using it more often. Since then, Hughes - who built his own chops leading Delirious and Matt Redman favorites - has seen the song take on a life of its own.
It must be a God thing.... People have seemed to really connect with it, and we've had some special times in worship using the song," he admits. "I remember one time at the end of a Worship Together conference in San Diego when we'd been performing the song. The band stopped, and then the congregation just kept singing the chorus for about 15 minutes."
Road tested and pastor approved, "Here I Am To Worship" was soon ready to be recorded as the title track for Hughes' debut album, released in late 2001. Produced by founding Sonic Flood members Jason Halbert and Dwayne Larring, the two pre-recorded the musical track then flew into London to record vocals with Tim in, of all places, the children's classroom at his church.
"They set up a microphone and their computer, and I sang along," Hughes remembers. "It was quite surreal being surrounded by teddy bears, dolls, and Lego's."
Today, Tim continues his worldwide work with Soul Survivor, and "Here I Am To Worship" keeps expanding to wider audiences. A quick Internet search for the song turns up excited churchgoers wanting to get printouts of the lyrics and lead sheets. And quite notably, Michael W. Smith offered his version of the song at a concert recorded for his upcoming Worship Again live album. (There's no official word yet on whether Smith's interpretation made the project's final track listing - the set releases October 22).
Hype or no hype, Tim Hughes remains strikingly humble about his work and prefers being called a worshiper rather than an artist.
"The main motivation behind the song was simply trying to capture a response to Jesus giving up his throne in Heaven to walk upon the earth and ultimately to die upon a cross," he confirms. "For me personally, it's been very exciting and a real privilege to see how God has used the song."
