La sfârșitul anilor '90, biserica de acasă a lui Matt Redman, din Watford, trecea printr-o perioadă spirituală grea.

Creativitatea muzicală a echipei de închinare era la cote înalte: cântări noi și influente pentru biserica locală, cu un impact asupra închinării din bisericile întregii țări, ba chiar din întreaga lume.

O dimensiune care lipsea
"Și totuși", își amintea Redman, în discuția cu David Schrader de la Crosswalk, "lipsea ceva. Așa că pastorul a făcut un lucru destul de curajos."

Pastorul era Mike Pilavachi, cofondatorul conferinței anuale Soul Survivor, cu 30.000 de participanți, și al ramurii sale pentru tinerii de 20-30 de ani, Momentum.

Pilavachi și-a întrebat adunarea ce anume Îi aduc ei lui Dumnezeu în închinare, sau dacă sunt acolo doar ca niște consumatori care absorb muzica. Ideea lui era că formația și biserica își pierduseră direcția în închinare, iar singura soluție era să dea la o parte orice diversiune și distragere; iar asta includea întreaga instalație de sunet și echipa de închinare.

Apoi muzica s-a stins...
La început, își amintește Matt, "deconectarea" nu a dus decât la o tăcere stânjenitoare. Dar, cu timpul, adunarea și-a redescoperit propriile voci, cântând fără acompaniament, înălțând rugăciuni din inimă și întâlnindu-L pe Dumnezeu într-un fel proaspăt.

Până când s-au simțit pregătiți să reintroducă muzicienii și instalația de sunet, biserica ajunsese la o perspectivă nouă asupra închinării: că totul este despre Isus și că închinarea cere un răspuns din inimă.

Un răspuns profund personal
Cântarea lui Matt, "The Heart of Worship", descrie pur și simplu ce s-a întâmplat:

When the music fades, all is stripped away, and I simply come
Longing just to bring something that's of worth that will bless your heart
I'm coming back to the heart of worship, and it's all about You, Jesus

Matt își amintește că a scris cântarea în grabă, în dormitorul lui, la scurt timp după drumul bisericii înapoi spre menirea ei de temelie. Nu existau planuri mărețe ca ea să devină un imn internațional. Cuvintele erau pur și simplu răspunsul lui personal la ceea ce învăța despre închinare.

Lăsând cântarea să respire
Când Matt i-a arătat cântarea lui Mike Pilavachi, pastorul i-a sugerat câteva mici ajustări ale versurilor, astfel încât orice membru al Bisericii lui Hristos, de oriunde, să se poată regăsi în ea.

Cântarea a devenit piesa care dă titlul albumului lui Matt Redman din 1999, "Heart of Worship", înregistrarea rămânând fidelă spiritului în care s-a născut cântarea. "Am hotărât să nu complicăm lucrurile", spune el, "și pur și simplu să lăsăm cântarea să respire."

Regăsește inima închinării
"Heart of Worship" a devenit o cântare de referință, cântată în biserici de toate confesiunile, de coruri și de lideri de închinare cu propriile lor interpretări. Privind în urmă la felul în care Dumnezeu a luat și a folosit cântarea, Matt spune: "Aproape că nu a trecut mai departe de dormitorul meu. Dar tocmai asta îmi place."

In the late 1990’s, Matt Redman’s home church in Watford was going through a spiritually tough time.

The worship band’s musical creativity was on a high, making new and influential songs for the local church with an impact on church worship nationwide – even worldwide.

A Missing Dynamic
"Yet", recalled Redman, talking to Crosswalk’s David Schrader, "there was a dynamic missing. So the pastor did a pretty brave thing."

The pastor was Mike Pilavachi, co-founder of the 30,000 attendance annual Soul Survivor and its 20s-30s sub-brand, Momentum.

Pilivachi asked his congregation what they were bringing to God in worship, or if they were just there as consumers, soaking up the music. His point was that the band and church had lost their way in worship, and the only solution was to strip out every diversion and distraction; and that included the entire sound system and the worship band.

Then the Music Faded...
Initially, Matt remembers, ‘unplugging’ just led to an embarrassing silence. But eventually the congregation rediscovered their own voices, singing unaccompanied, offering up heartfelt prayers and encountering God in a fresh way.

By the time they felt sufficiently ready to reintroduce the musicians and sound system, the church had found a new perspective on worship: that it’s all about Jesus, and that it demands a response from the heart.

Intensely Personal Response
Matt’s song ‘The Heart of Worship’ simply describes what occurred:

When the music fades, all is stripped away, and I simply come

I’m coming back to the heart of worship, and it’s all about You, Jesus

Matt’s recollection of writing the song is him scibbling it quickly in his bedroom soon after the church’s journey back to its core purpose. There were no grand intentions for it to become an international anthem. The words were simply his personal response to what he was learning about worship.

Letting The Song Breathe
When Matt shared the song with Mike Pilavachi, the pastor suggested a few small adjustments to the lyrics so any member of the wider Church of Christ could also relate to its sentiment.

The song became the title track for Matt Redman’s 1999 album - ‘Heart of Worship’ - keeping the recording faithful to the spirit of the song’s origins. “We decided to not get all complicated,” he says, “and just let the song ‘breathe.”

Find The Heart of Worship
Heart of Worship became a new standard sung by churches of every denomination, choirs and with worship leader making their own interpretations. Looking back on how God has taken and used the song, Matt says: “It nearly didn’t go any further than my bedroom. But I love that.”
